    THE WINERY

Benito Santos was a man with a dream… while working the Albariño vineyards of his gandparents, he one day envisioned how the world would know and appreciate this noble grape. After years of dedication, he founded his own winery in 1979. Located in the charming village of Vilanova de Arousa, Atlantic northwest coast of Spain, he produced great quality wines. During this time he became one of the first major advocates for Albariño grape. Benito Santos was the first invited to participate in the Albariño Wine Festival of Cambados and he was awarded several times. In 1981 he was appointed member of the Specific Regulatory Council of Rias Baixas, he played an instrumental role in the creation of the Rias Baixas Designation of Origen in 1988. Decades later, Benito Santos passed the baton to his sucessors. In 2002 the winery was extended and renewed. This stage is characterized by the leap to the international market and the addition of Benito Santos Mencia and Benito Santos Godello from Monterrei D.O. to our portfolio. Today the sucessors of Benito Santos continue to work with the same passion and enthusiasm from the past to offer an honest wine, faithful reflection of a unique terroir.

1.- “After more than forty-five years of Galician wines and when I was very young, I had no other choice but to work on my grandfather and teacher´s land as a result of the Spanish Civil War•”. (Benito Santos´s diary)

2.- “Anecdote. If my memory does not fail me, in 1965 my friend and mayor of Cambados, J. Tote, asked me to set up a stand in the local festival, selling albariño wine. It was the first wine to be sold in the festival and a very good idea, but my frien, the mayor, had to convince me. The wine thar I took, some 500 bottel, lasted approximately four hours.” (Benito Santos´s diary)

    VINEYARD

Las Rias Baixas D.O. is divided in five subzones. Our vineyards grow all along the Salnes Valley. This is an area of low grounds, Atlantic climate with well-distributed rainfall and soft temperatures. The clay soils are full of minerals and the acidity of them makes our wines so different from the wines of the rest of the world. The average age of the vines is 30 years. The conduction system is the traditional trellised vines which allows to get a gradual maturation of the grapes and decrease the risk of diseases. Monterrei D.O. is divided in two subzones. The Ladera de Monterrei subzone has a Continental Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influence. With considerable temperature fluctuations, we find perfect slaty soils for red wines and perfect clay and sandy soils with low PH for white wines. The average altitude of the vineyars is 600 – 800 metres above the sea level and the average age is 25 years. The vineyard is a vertical trellis system and harvest is manual.

    GRAPE

    ALBARIÑO
Albariño wine from Las Rias Baixas is considered one of the best white wines in the world. This is a variety of small grape clusters, early maturation and averagely vigorous. With a yellow straw colour, brilliant with greenish iridescence, in nose we find ample fruity aromas with a clear hint of fine flowery perfumes. Its taste is fresh and soft. Full-bodied, well-balanced and with enough alcoholic graduation. Pleasant and long aftertaste.
    GODELLO
The Godello variety is undergoing strong expansion over the last few years. It is perfectly adapted to dry soils, the best quality grapes grow on steep slopes of medium fertility. With a pale yellow colour and a greenish rim, it presents an aromatic a complex profile. It is not as intense as Albariño but it is full of minerality, white fruit with a touch of grass and a soft floral essence. Godello wines usually are kind in mouth, silky and creamy. They enjoy a good capacity on ageing.
    MENCÍA
Mencia is the greatest red variety in the Spanish Northwest. Ideally growing on slaty soils, the grape clusters are small and compact. These wines have a strong red colour and show musts very fruity and aromatic. In mouth they are well-balanced and well-structured.
